La Quinta

La Quinta is considered a resort city in Riverside County, especially since its located in the Coachella Valley between Indian Wells and Indio. The population was 37,467 during the 2010 census; which was an increase from 23,694 in 2000. La Quinta is considered to be the gem of the desert.

La Quinta is one of the top golf destinations in the US. Surrounded by those destinations is the La Quinta Resort and Club that goes back to 1926. The resort was where director Frank Capra wrote the screenplay for Lost Horizon.

Agriculture in La Quinta was established in the late 19th century and early 20th century. In the modern age, agriculture developed in La Quinta and “East Valley” using pre-modern and contemporary irrigation techniques.

In 1926, A man named Walter Morgan established the La Quinta Resort at the northern section of Marshall Cove as a type of scheduled hideaway for nearby Hollywood’s celebrities and socialities.

As nearby desert cities grew to capacity, La Quinta’s growth rose dramatically by the mid-1980s which then lead the town to be incorporated as part of the Riverside County in 1982.

The surrounding geography has a lot to do with Coachella Valley’s climate. Its unique year-round warm weather with some of the most temperate winters west of the Rocky Mountains, comes from being surrounded by high mountain ranges on three sides. La Quinta has mild winters and hot summers. Its annual average high temperature is 89 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average yearly low is 62 degrees Fahrenheit. During the summer is very common to experience over 108 degrees Fahrenheit. The peak hot days sometimes even exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

In La Quinta, residents experience 269 sunny days per year. The US average is 205 sunny days. Residents often take shelter from the heat and dry desert climate in their homes. Homeowners use air conditioning to stay comfortable, but that results in high utility bills. It is not uncommon to enjoy indoor activities to avoid the hot sun and other elements.
